Austrian Silver Snuff Box, Prague Assay, c.1860–1866

This Austrian silver snuff box dates to the period between 1860 and 1866, during the final years of the Austrian Empire’s 13 loth silver standard. Expertly crafted and finely detailed, the box features a scalloped rectangular form with engine-turned geometric patterning across the lid and body. The interior is gilded, which was both decorative and functional, as it helped preserve the aroma of the snuff.

Stamped inside the lid are clearly legible hallmarks: the number “13” indicating a silver fineness of .812, a quartered shield symbol of the Austrian Empire, and the letter “B” for the Prague assay office. A small “6” outside the oval control mark places the date between 1860 and 1866. The maker’s mark “HP” is also present, though the identity of the silversmith remains uncertain.

An excellent example of mid-19th century continental silverwork, this box combines functionality with refined craftsmanship. It would make a worthy addition to any collection of antique snuff boxes or Austrian Empire silver.
