Antique sterling silver novelty pin cushion, crafted in the form of a gentleman’s lace-up shoe, was made by S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd and hallmarked at the Chester Assay Office, c.1909. A delightful example of Edwardian figural silver, this piece showcases the whimsical and functional craftsmanship typical of the era.
The shoe measures 5 inches (12.6 cm) in length, 1.8 inches (46 mm) tall, and 1.57 inches (40 mm) wide, with a total weight of 113.4 grams. The upper is made from solid sterling silver, modeled with realistic detail, while the base is a fitted wooden sole. It originally would have featured a textile pin cushion insert, which is now missing.
The hallmark includes the lion passant for sterling, the Chester assay mark (three wheat sheaves and a sword), and the maker’s mark “S.B & S Ld” in a rectangular punch for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd. The shoe is also marked with the Registered Design Number 548913, confirming the pattern was officially filed in 1909.
Condition is consistent with age and use: there are visible dings, small dents, and a couple minor cracks in the silver body, but the structure remains intact. The shoe displays well and remains a desirable collector’s piece, especially with the rare Chester hallmark and registered design.
